Best Hybrid Cycle under Rs 30000

Here’s a list of the best hybrid cycle under Rs. 30000/- available in India in 2022. These cycles are perfect to start your bicycling life!

With cycling in India getting ever popular, hybrid bikes are leading the race in sales. Hybrid cycles are perfect for a beginner cyclist, who isn’t sure whether they want to spend all they time on the road or whether they want to hit the trails.

Giving the best of both worlds, hybrid cycles are understandably popular.

Hybrid Cycles in India

What is a Hybrid Cycle?

A hybrid bicycle simply put, is a hybrid between a road bike and a mountain bike. It is a massive compromise between the two, while trying to give an experience of both worlds.

Hybrid cycles usually come equipped with flat handlebars, 700C wheels, 32-40 mm tyres, rigid fork (or a suspension fork with minimal travel), upright ergonomics and beginner friendly gearing. Bikes may come with V or mechanical disc brakes.

If you are looking to excel on the road or trail, then a hybrid bike is not meant for you. But if you want to enjoy a little of everything and the occasional commute as well, then a hybrid cycle makes sense.

What should you look for in the best hybrid cycle under Rs 30000?

There is one rule when searching for a hybrid cycle under Rs 30000, and that is the KISS principle. Keep It Simple, Stupid!

The more ‘features’ that a bicycle model advertises, the farther away you need to run from it. At this price point, the added elements on your bike are not an asset, but a liability, especially in the long run.

  • Your ideal bike is firstly in the correct frame size as per your requirement. It should be comfortable for your body proportions, without which the bike is useless for you.
  • The frame will either be built with aluminium alloy or steel. Steel is heavier than aluminium.
  • You are looking for V-Brakes, since these are significantly easier to maintain.
  • No suspension, one less thing to get spoilt. A suspension fork adds unnecessary weight to your bike.
  • Multi geared or single speed, depending on your area of residence and fitness levels. If you are in a flat land, you can manage with a single speed, else you will need to shift gears to make life easier.
  • Tyres. You want slightly fatter tyres, so that you can run lower tyre pressure and be more comfortable on a variety of terrain.
  • Most importantly, ASS! After Sales Service of the brand. If none is available in your city, then you will have to fend for yourself. If you are a new cyclist, chances are you might not know much about repairing a bike yourself. Tread with caution…

What is on offer?

When you head to a store offline or online, what can you expect from a bike in this budget?

Below 10000 rupees, you are most likely going to get yourself a single speed. Don’t get dissuaded by the price, these are super simple bikes and will be easy to maintain. Most bikes will be steel at this price point.

Between 10000 to 20000, you are looking at bikes with multi-speed, suspension fork, aluminium frames, at times even mechanical disc brakes.

20000 to 30000 sees you get lighter, quicker bikes, which will be significantly easier to ride. Better frame and components will give you a more enjoyable ownership experience, with less chance of mechanical failures midride.

Most cheaper bikes only have a QR on the front wheel. A useful addition, especially considering that the rear tyre punctures more often than the front.

A decent spec product for a good price. The Rapide sells for Rs 23000/- and you can read the full specifications on the Firefox Website.

This 21-speed bike uses Shimano Acera components, has a 60 mm lockout front suspension fork, JAK mechanical discs and an adjustable stem. It is quite literally overkill, as you don’t need a suspension fork or disc brakes for city rides. The bike weighs in at a claimed 16.5 kg, which is quite porky.

  1. I wish to buy an foldable bicycle that I can carry in my Car suron trip ! R they good to buy or any good options available

    1. Hi, yes depending on model. Folding bikes are good recreational vehicles. There are multiple options available for a variety of budgets. The entry level ones are from Decathlon.

If you are wondering how to carry your regular cycle in a car, you can check out this article of ours: http://cyclingmonks.com/transporting-cycle-india/

      Hope this helps 🙂

  2. 3. Very nice article – Please advise me on buying a Hybrid cycle brand / model no.

I’m 54 years old. Been cycling for a year now. My requirements –

    Hybrid
    Budget 35,000/- max
No front suspension / with a lock
approx cycling – about 300-400 km per month. 30-50 km per ride.
looking for comfort, speed and light weight
Only Road riding – no off roading.

Some of the Options Scott Sub Cross 50 / Trek Fx1 /Giant Escape 3 / Polygon Cascade 4 looks a good deal after seeing your video.

    1. Dear Sir

We would suggest between the Trek and Giant, whichever is available in your city. There is a lot of problems with stock and availability right now, so you will need to check at the stores in your town.

The Polygon Cascade is an MTB and not suited for your purpose. The Scott runs knobby tyres and not useful for you on the road.

Please do make sure you buy the correct size frame, irrespective of which brand or model you choose.

The Trek uses V-brakes instead of mechanical discs, so it will be easier to maintain as compared to the Giant. But both bikes are excellent value for money and perfect for your requirements. You will not go wrong with either 🙂

      Hope this helps!

      1. Sir, I have heard Giant Escape 3 is not good for 90 Kgs and 5’10 height is that true? how to choose the correct size and frame?

        1. Hi Vinay

Every bicycle has a total rider+luggage+bicycle weight limit. But it surely wouldn’t be just 90 kg!

So for your height you would be looking at a Large sized frame.

Do have a look at the Giant Website, it will have all the details about frame size and total usable weight.

But, whoever told you that you can’t ride an Escape 3 for your height and weight is horribly wrong and uninformed.

        2. Hello Vinay, I bought the Giant Escape 3 (2020 edition) in December of the same year. I currently weigh 92 and at the time of purchase I weighed around 110. So far, I have managed to get 3000+ kms without a professional servicing. Having said that I do clean the drivetrain after every use and know how to fix gear and brake cables. I can also change tyres but have never experienced a flat tyre till now. I mostly ride on tarmac, dirt and gravel but the bike has seen it’s fair share of technical trail riding. Although the bike is not built for the purpose, it can handle the trails around my hometown with ease as it’s
fairly well built bike. However, I would not recommend people to go trail riding on it as the tyres are not fit to handle trails. But I have managed just fine with just the stock tyres on these trails. So it’s safe to say that the Giant Escape 3 is more than capable of handling 90+ kgs, and it shouldn’t be a problem as long as the total weight (bike + rider + luggage) does not exceed 130kgs.

  4. Thank you – just pre ordered Giant Escape 3. Hopefully will be riding it in 2-3 weeks.

  5. I am looking to buy a Montra Trance Pro considering the price when compared to similar models of other brands such as Firefox, Giant, Trek
What are your thoughts and do you have suggestion to look for other models.

    1. The Trance Pro from Montra is good value for money. It would have been better with V-brakes rather than mechanical discs. Making ownership that much simpler.
Giant and Trek cannot be compared, as they are 25% more expensive than the Montra. The Firefox Rapide is competition to the Trance. Check that out as well.

  6. Please suggest between Merida crossway 20D/Trek Fx1/Mongoose 27.5/canondale bad boy. Also what are the things to look for in case of pre-owned bikes

    1. Hi

Since this query of yours in the hybrid article, we assume you are looking for a hybrid. That rules out the Mongoose 27.5, which is an MTB.

The Trek FX1 would make the most sense, but as you have already realised, buying new bikes is difficult with the current shortage in the market. Which is why it makes most sense to buy what is in stock 😀

For pre-owned bikes, have a look at these pointers: http://cyclingmonks.com/buying-secondhand-cycle-india/

      All the best 🙂

  7. Hi, Thanks for the informative article. I have a question.
Are V Brakes efficient in braking in wet conditions? I commute to work on my 4 year old Mach City 21 Speed hybrid in Bangalore and faced issues with braking while riding in rain (light rain) and had few near misses. Now planning for an upgrade and was therefore looking for one with a disc brake. What do you advice? Are disc brakes too much of a maintenance headache? Also, why don’t manufacturers provide/sell the old school mud-guards instead of those fenders ?

    1. Hi Delwin

Yes V-brakes are capable for wet conditions. It also depends on the quality of v-brakes. These on higher end bikes will be much better than those compared to entry level bikes.

Entry level bikes with disc brakes come with their own challenges. These are cable actuated mechanical discs and aren’t great for braking or reliable.

Depending on brand/ model/ budget etc. we would recommend v-brakes over disc. Until and unless you are spending a lot.

Mud guards are unfortunately not ‘fashionable’, which is why most manufacturers don’t provide them. And the flimsy plastic fenders are more rattle traps than protection from mud. Recommend checking out SKS fenders for your bike, which has excellent coverage.

  8. Very helpful. Roadrunner Pro V, Montra Downtown, Riverside 500. Please recommend. I am 6’2″, Approx 82-85 kg, ride approx 100 km + per week. Age 67 yrs. Thank you.

    1. Dear sir,

At your height, it is unlikely that Montra or Firefox will make frames for your requirements.

You would need an XL frame size, Decathlon might have it. Else you will have to check with brands like Giant/ Trek/ Merida etc.

  9. Hi Avinash Bro. Need ur suggestion. I have been riding hybrid cycle without gear. (Mach city Munich single speed) my riding kms would be 35 to 50kms per week. Now I would like to go for the next level. Probably Weekend long ride for 50km approx. could u suggest best hybrid cycle for 20k to 30k range.

    1. Hi Arun

Seeing the shortage of stock in the market it is difficult to recommend anything specifically without knowing what is available in your city.

The Giant in this list should work well for your requirements, if available in your size and in your city.

      Hope this helps 🙂

  10. Thanks Bro. I am gonna try Giant escape 3 this weekend. I live in Chennai and my height is 5.3. I been told that only S size fits for my height. Apart from Giant, do u suggest any other? please suggest.

    1. Yes a Small sized frame should fit you best. But you will only know for sure once you actually try the bike in the shop.

The Montra Downtown if you want to spend less. The Trek FX 1 if it is in stock. These are a couple of other options you can consider.

  11. YOU MISS OUT MONTRA TRANCE PRO 2021… THIS IS BEST WITH 24 SPEED…VERY GOOD HYBRID

  12. Hello,
I want to buy a hybrid within 30k…i live in kolkata and given the condition of the roads, what do you think i should buy if i want to ride around 80 to 100km at once ? And could you also mention the maintenance cost of it?? Thank you

    1. Hi Subhodeep

Any of these bikes can easily do a century ride 🙂 It is all up to the rider to do it!

Maintenance cost for bikes at this price point is quite low. A full service (which is recommended once a year) costs anywhere between 1-2 thousand rupees, varying from city to city. Wear and tear parts need to be replaced as and when required. That entirely depends on the number of kilometres you ride in a year.

      Hope this information helps

      Cheers!

  13. It’s almost a perfect list for hybrid bikes i personally own a firefox rapide (acera) which i rode for 15000+ km over streets , highways , cobbles, potholes, climbs one thing which i should pinpoint is the tyres which originally came with it are quite crappy thing i like the most is the adjustable stem which by time help me to get more aero
For all the beginners just keep riding you gonna have best time of your life .

    1. Hi Govind

Thanks for your feedback and inputs 🙂

Dropped you an email regarding the same!

  14. Hello Avinash,

This is a wonderful and thorough article. Very helpful! Thank you so much.

I have shortlisted these hybrid bicycles: Montra Trance Pro and Firefox Rapide. Which would be a better option considering the gear system and brakes in the current models.

The Montra Trance Pro currently comes with a Shimano FD-TX800 3- Speed Front Derailleur, Shimano Tourney (RD-TX800) 8-Speed Rear Derailleur, Shimano ST-EF500 EZ Fire Plus (3×8 Speed) Shifters and Logan LB Mechanical Disc Brakes.

The Firefox Rapide currently comes with a Microshift M22 3-Speed Front Derailleur, a Microshift M21l 7-Speed rear derailleur, Microshift TS38 3×7 shifters and alloy V-brakes.

Is the Shimano system in Montra Trance Pro better than the Microshift in Firefox Rapide, while the v-brakes in the Rapide a better option than the cable operated disc brakes in the Trance Pro?

    Thank you.

    1. Hi Sachin

Like you have correctly surmised. The V-brakes are better because it will be easier to maintain in the long run.

Shimano as a brand has been making drivetrain parts for much longer than microSHIFT, so it scores there. Also, you can buy Shimano parts in India, but you will not get microSHIFT replacements as easily. But the two are compatible.

Also please make sure you get the correct frame size. Both are equally matched. And would suggest checking which bike has a better sale point in your city, and choose accordingly. Since, you will need to go back to the store for service and repairs as and when required.

      Hope this helps 🙂

  15. Thank you very much for this awesome awesome article.
    Very informative and orienting indeed.

Would you perhaps have any thoughts if one had shortlisted Riverside 120, Mach City Munich 21 speed and Hero Sprint Traveller and was confused on making a selection between the 3?

    1. Hi

      Glad you liked it 🙂

You would have more frame size options in the Riverside 120, which would be useful if you are an outlier in terms of height.

Else, it is close between the Riverside 120 and the Mach City

      Hope this helps!

  16. Hi

I would like to purchase a new hybrid bike but after seeing this detailed post, I got confused, lol.
But I need your expertise here, please suggest me to find a perfect bike that suits me.
    Height – 5ft 6inch , Weight – 68kg Budget -25k.

    Thanks

  17. Really confused between raleigh strada elite and escape 3. I reside in a rural area with broken patches of tarmac and big potholes at some places. Hence i thought a lockout suspension might not be a bad choice. (Haven’t rode a proper rigid bike on these roads ever so i fear i might damage the fork in the long run ). I also wish to start participating in smaller BRMs. I intend to ride close to 30- 60 km . I owned a cosmic Voyager and it is no longer fit for me and used to ride 12 kms occasionally. 35k is my maximum budget and I want a bike that won’t give me frequent niggles ( decent quality if not the best ) and last for at least ten years.
I read from some social Media comments that the Raleigh bikes sold in india are not made by the actual Raleigh bikes in UK. I don’t know how genuine was that comment. I expect an acceptable good quality for the price paid. If someone has better suggestion (hybrid ) please do suggest.

  18. I would like to purchase montra timba my hight is 179 cm , Is this cycle suitable for me? Please suggest me find a perfect single speed bike for my hight

  19. Why not check Cradiac cycles, cheap and good hybrids. I’ve been using Gunner pro model with best results past 6 months.

  20. Hi,
I need a suggestion to buy a hybrid cycle below 25K. Is Firefox Meteor a good choice or 91 Expedition/Endurance Pro ? Please advice.
