Many must have read about Jyoti Kumari, who cycled 1200 km from Gurgaon to her hometown in Bihar with her unwell father sitting pillion.

Her’s is not the only case of people cycling thousands of kilometres in India during the lockdown, in the hope of getting home. There have been countless instances of urban labour returning to their villages as things came to a grinding halt in cities. These people with no other means of getting home have set out on food and by cycles.

Jyoti Kumari’s story stands out from the rest because this tenacious 15-year-old travelled this incredible distance with her ailing father seated on the bike in just 7 days. It is testament to the human spirit, what a person is capable of doing when the going gets tough.

The Cycling Federation of India recognising this act of bravery and human spirit, has got in touch with her and called her for a cycling trial in New Delhi.

If she does pass the trial she will be selected to train at the National Cycling Academy at the IGI Stadium complex. The CFI already has around 10 15-year-olds in the academy, who they hope to train to become promising athletes.

Once the lockdown is lifted, she will be brought to Delhi. All expenses of her travel and stay, will be taken care of by the federation. Costs of an accompanying person will also be borne by the federation.

Wishing Jyoti all the very best, in what could possibly be a life changing opportunity.
